Born 2 November 1808 in Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte, part of Jules' childhood was spent in Valogne and he set many of his stories here. Jules was a romantic, a monarchist and a dandy.

The showers were in a sort of dungeon under the château, dark and threatening, but the amenities were sparklingly new, a rather incongruous combination.
